Tampa
Inicially the source of phosphate production, Henry
Plants railroad link to Tampa allowed the phosphate and commerical fishing
exports to move north. Vicente Ybor also moved his cigar production in the
area in 1885 facilitating export to Cuba. Due to the
huge success, many cigar factories relocated to Tampa make it
a major production center.
Resulting from the prosperity era, today you can visit the ecletic Tampa
Municipal Museum and see the glory days of the Tampa Bay Hotel built by
Plant. Cigars continued to be the backbone of Tampa and a whopping 500
million cigars where sold in 1929. Mid 1950's is indicative of the
Bolita Mob that thrived on corrupt lotteries establishing his power through New
York and Batista-Cuba.
